Overview

Brazil has always been a nation that breathes football. Although people often point to the success of the national team as the greatest indication for the country’s undying love for the sport, it also boasts a magnificent domestic league complete with several local derbies that rage with passion and intensity.

The city’s many favelas underline large social problems in Brazil, but they form fertile ground for excellent players. No wonder then, that this city has many football venues. A game at the Maracanã stadium of Flamengo or Fluminense is something that has to be on your wishlist if you are going to travel such a distance, but there is more! Botafogo and Vasco da Gama are just two other teams within the city limits, both playing at stadiums where the atmosphere can really flourish on a good day.

Expect days spent in stadiums, playing footvolley with locals at the Copacabana and sunbathing beneath swaying palms, sipping caipirinhas or beers at sunset and embracing the rhythms of samba. Looking for an incredible football adventure in paradise? This is it. With a plethora of open-air cafes, samba beats that float through the streets, scenic outlooks, beaches hugged by tropical fruit stands and stadiums are adorned with oceans of colourful shirts, with thousands of fans screaming for their beloved heroes and the goals are flowing, the stunning game is the most beautiful in Rio.

Most people will only visit South America once in their lives, therefore we make sure it will be your best football experience ever. We bring together fans from all around the world who seek to experience football off the beaten path. You will share the experience of a lifetime in Rio de Janeiro alongside a group of like-minded fans who hold a wealth of experience far deeper than just watching their local team.

Day 1 - Welcome to Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is eagerly waiting for you! The city is by far the most touristic and beautiful in the country. And here the journey begins! Our van will pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel at Copacabana Beach, which is around 6 minutes walking distance from the beach. Easy check if you arrive in the afternoon. You can also stay in the hotel and recover from the long flight. If you arrived in the morning and your bed is not ready, drop off your luggage and go for something to eat at the beach. At night, you meet will Mateus, Homefans local host who will be responsible for our group during the whole trip. And why not begin the experience with some Brazilian steaks and some caipirinhas? Enjoy the most out of your first day and feel the heat!

Day 2 - Botafogo Stadium Tour
Day 2 - Botafogo Stadium Tour

Let’s wake up early because we have got a busy day ahead! After a delicious breakfast, you will meet Mateus and together, make our way to the stadium of Botafogo, Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos. The build was finished in 2007 and it hosted the athletics competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics. We will go on a stadium tour and get to know more about this stadium and the history of Botafogo. To give you a hint, their glory days are in the past. They used to have the best team in Brazil. Of all clubs, Botafogo had the most players for the national team in that period. Names such as Carlos Alberto Torres and Garrincha have an important role in their history. In the afternoon, you will have free time to explore the city, have a nice walk in the lagoon, get some sun, meet with locals and play sports at the beach. You have the freedom to choose and our local host will be always available for the activities.

Day 3 - Botafogo Match Day Experience
Day 3 - Botafogo Match Day Experience

In the morning, Mateus will offer you a range of activities to do in the good Brazilian weather. Why not do a Homefans Favela Tour and get to know the life inside the slums and try different local food? Or hike the "Two Brothers" hill and have the view of the city? In the afternoon, after experiencing the behind the scenes of this beautiful Olympic stadium, today is the first matchday experience! Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos will pack with black and white fans. You will meet our local host around 4 hours before the match, take the subway and go to the pre-match, where you will have some beers with Botafogo supporters. Around 1 hour before the match starts, Mateus will escort you to your seats. Then, sit down and watch 90 minutes of football! One tip: In Rio de Janeiro, cold beer is allowed in the stadium and it costs 1,5 euros. Enjoy!

Day 4 - Vasco da Gama Stadium Tour
Day 4 - Vasco da Gama Stadium Tour

Today, we meet in the afternoon. In the morning, you can do some sightseeing around Christ The Redeemer, Sugarloaf or get to know other amazing beaches close to Copacabana. The best ones are Ipanema and Leblon. Mateus will be at your disposal for anything. After that, in the afternoon, we will go to the most old school and authentic stadium in Brazil, São Januário, from Vasco da Gama. We will get a tour at the stadium that is located in the middle of the favelas. Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea. We can also have lunch in their headquarters and taste some beautiful codfish. The ground has a capacity of around 15,000 supporters and the Ultras are one of the most intense in Brazil. A nice curiosity to know about: The club raised through their youth academy names such as Romário, Juninho and Phillipe Coutinho. So there’s plenty of history to learn about!

Day 5 - Vasco da Gama Match Day Experience
Day 5 - Vasco da Gama Match Day Experience

The second matchday experience! You will meet our local host in your hotel and go together in taxis (far away from Copacabana) to Vasco da Gama area, located in a rough part of Rio. Expect a lot of noise, barbecue with amazing steaks all over the place, samba and a lot of party in the pre-match! A place where Vasco da Gama supporters meet before the match. There we will listen to their stories about their club whilst enjoying a beer or two! Once we soaked up this pre-match atmosphere, we will make our way to the stadium. We are sure you will hear a lot of chants, flags and an atmosphere you have never seen before in your life.

Day 6 - Flamengo v Fluminense
Day 6 - Flamengo v Fluminense

Get yourself ready for one of the biggest football Derbies in Brazil between Flamengo and Fluminense. The Fla x Flu match is known everywhere and considered by Four Four Two Magazine one of the most intense in the world! Both clubs play at the iconic Maracanã and in the game, they are separated in 50-50. Our local host is a Flamengo's fan, so he knows everything about his club and will be able to share some amazing stories. Before the match, he will take you to a bar called Chico's and have some beers with Flamengo supporters. They always play a lot of music before the match starts! Flamengo over the past years is fighting for the 1st place in the league whereas Fluminense is trying to stay out of the relegation zone. However, the Fla Flu derby is magical, and anything can happen in a thrilling Maracanã.

Day 7 - Maracanã Stadium Tour
Day 7 - Maracanã Stadium Tour

It is time for Maracanã Stadium Tour! Officially called Estádio Mário Filho, was built to serve as the flagship venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the biggest football stadium in the world. Construction began in August 1948 and was completed almost two years later. Eight days later, Maracanã hosted the opening match of the 1950 World Cup between Brazil and Mexico (4-0). It would go on to host four more matches in the first round group stage and a further three in the second round stage, among which the deciding final match between Uruguay and Brazil (2-1). The official attendance of the final was about 173,000 paying spectators, but it is estimated that more than 200,000 witnessed the game live from the stands. When Brazil got awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007, it was clear that Maracanã was destined to host the final and would, therefore, need a massive redevelopment.

The stadium can be easily accessed by metro and train. Maracanã station is a stop on metro line 2, which can be boarded in downtown Rio or the Flamengo and Botafogo areas. It can also be reached with a transfer from line 1, which runs from the Copacabana and Ipanema areas.

Our local host will meet you in the hotel and head by subway to the stadium. We've been many times with groups over there and we can't get enough of this! Every time you step on the field, magical things can happen!

After the tour, Mateus will take you guys to a samba party in the Lapa neighbourhood!

Day 8 - Vasco da Gama Match Day Experience
Day 8 - Vasco da Gama Match Day Experience

Vasco! Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama and was founded originally as a rowing club before later building its football team. It has an impressive success rate with 22 wins at the state championship and four wins at Brazilian National League. The team’s colours are black and white, as with Botafogo, but the mascot of Vasco – a red and white admiral ship that represents the Portuguese helmsman Vasco da Gama – clearly distinguishes it from rivals. In terms of fans, Vasco is the second largest team in Rio de Janeiro.

Get ready to go back to this local neighbourhood to try more steaks and street food barbecue! As always, an amazing football experience ahead of you! As for logistics, it will be pretty much the same as the tour. You will meet Mateus in the hotel and go by taxis to the pitch, around 4 hours early, so you have time to enjoy the pre-match experience. Around 45 minutes before the game starts, go to the seats and enjoy football!

Day 9 - Fluminense Match Day Experience
Day 9 - Fluminense Match Day Experience

Our trip is, unfortunately, reaching its final and we are sure you having the best time possible. We've been to tons of beaches, drunk caipirinhas, eat amazing steaks and had a lot of activities, but we still have two more games to watch. Today we are joining Fluminense supporters, with colours which are easily identified by the striking contrast of maroon, green and white, earning the team its nickname of "tricolor carioca". Founded in 1902, it has a notable history of success with 31 wins at state championships and four wins at Brazilian National League to add to its impressive CV.

Day 10 - Flamengo Match Day Experience
Day 10 - Flamengo Match Day Experience

Today will be dedicated to some quality group time at the beach in the morning and football in the afternoon/night! We will meet up around 9:00, book a nice place at Copacabana and get some sun while drinking beers and caipirinhas, wrapping up the weekend. After that, we can have lunch and go to the last game of this amazing trip!

You've been to Flamengo before and why not going for the second time?

The team’s colours are red and black with a vulture as a mascot and the boastful slogan of O Mais Querido do Brasil (the most beloved in Brazil). You will go together with your local host by subway to Flamengo's supporters pre-match, with tons of beers, steaks and samba! Enjoy the atmosphere, take photos and make sure you will remember this experience forever! After the match, Mateus will book a table in a nice restaurant for a final group dinner!

Day 11 - Time to Say Goodbye

Football with Matheus in Rio = Saudade guaranteed

Thanks to Homefans, I experienced the best month of my life in Brazil. A truly life-changing experience. Rio de Janeiro is a must for every genuine football lover with four clubs in three different stadiums. Besides that, Rio has it all. The famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, a rain forest and one of the seven wonders of the world (Christ the Redeemer). If you are looking for someone with a great sense of humor, who can fully introduce you to Brazilian football culture, knows a lot about the history of the country and can show you all hotspots in the city -> Matheus is your man! In Matheus, I have a friend for the rest of my life! To conclude, I usually never write reviews, but for Homefans and Matheus I wanted to make an exception. Words cannot express how much I can recommend this trip!

Matheus is the best!

Matheus was my guide for à la carte Flamengo, Fluminense, and Vasco da Gama matches while I was in Rio in October 2019. He is a fantastic local guide who truly loves and appreciates football and its ability to bring together people from all over the world. I cannot recommend him more highly!

Amazing Experience

I went on the Brazil trip back in 2018, and watched four matches in Rio and Sao Paulo, along with countless other experiences, like stadium tours, city walks, beach days and restaurant and bar hopping. It was fantastic, I learned so much about Brazilian culture and about the history and importance of each club. Pedro, our local host, was incredible, and so was Matheus, who helped us on the Fla-Flu day. Because of this trip I'd later become local host in Porto, hoping to provide great experiences to others as I received here. 5* experience!
