Overview

Brazil has always been a nation that breathes football. Although people often point to the success of the national team as the greatest indication for the country’s undying love for the sport, it also boasts a magnificent domestic league complete with several local derbies that rage with passion and intensity.

From the city where rowing was the most popular sport at the end of the 19th century, the greatest power in national football emerged! Rio de Janeiro is a fertile ground for excellent players, no wonder then, that this city has many football venues! A game at the Maracanã stadium of Flamengo or Fluminense is something that has to be on your wishlist if you are going to travel such a distance, but there is more! Botafogo and Vasco da Gama are just two other teams within the city limits, both playing at stadiums where the atmosphere can really flourish on a good day.

Expect days spent in stadiums, playing footvolley with locals at the Copacabana, sunbathing beneath swaying palms, sipping caipirinhas or beers at sunset and embracing the rhythms of samba. With a plethora of open-air cafes and bars, in Rio samba beats that float through the streets. And as for the football, stadiums are adorned with oceans of colourful shirts, with thousands of fans screaming for their beloved heroes and the goals are flowing, the beautiful game is  at its most stunning in Rio. Day 4 - Botafogo Stadium Tour

Let’s wake up early because we have got a busy day ahead! After a delicious breakfast, you will meet the group and together, make our way to the stadium of Botafogo, Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos. The build was finished in 2007 and it hosted the athletics competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics. We will go on a stadium tour and get to know more about this stadium and the history of Botafogo. To give you a hint, their glory days are in the past. They used to have the best team in Brazil. Of all clubs, Botafogo had the most players for the national team in that period. Names such as Carlos Alberto Torres and Garrincha have an important role in their history. In the afternoon, you will have free time to explore the city, have a nice walk in the lagoon, get some sun, meet with locals and play sports at the beach. You have the freedom to choose and our local host will be always available for the activities.

Day 5 - Optional Rio sightseeing tour and Vasco da Gama Stadium Tour
Day 5 - Optional Rio sightseeing tour and Vasco da Gama Stadium Tour

Today, we meet in the afternoon. In the morning, you can do some sightseeing around Christ The Redeemer, Sugarloaf or get to know other amazing beaches close to Copacabana. The best ones are Ipanema and Leblon. Matheus will be at your disposal for anything. After that, in the afternoon, we will go to the most old school and authentic stadium in Brazil, São Januário, from Vasco da Gama. We will get a tour at the stadium that is located in the middle of the favelas. Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea. We can also have lunch in their headquarters and taste some beautiful codfish. The ground has a capacity of around 15,000 supporters and the Ultras are one of the most intense in Brazil. A nice curiosity to know about: The club raised through their youth academy names such as Romário, Juninho and Phillipe Coutinho. So there’s plenty of history to learn about!

Day 6 - Vasco da Gama Match Day Experience
Day 6 - Vasco da Gama Match Day Experience

PLEASE NOTE - THIS MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE MAY BE MOVED TO ANOTHER DAY, WE WILL CONFIRM THE FINAL SCHEDULE WHEN FIXTURES ARE ANNOUNCED.

Vasco! Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama and was founded originally as a rowing club before later building its football team. It has an impressive success rate with 22 wins at the state championship and four wins at Brazilian National League. The team’s colours are black and white, as with Botafogo, but the mascot of Vasco – a red and white admiral ship that represents the Portuguese helmsman Vasco da Gama – clearly distinguishes it from rivals. In terms of fans, Vasco is the second largest team in Rio de Janeiro.

Get ready to go back to this local neighbourhood to try more steaks and street food barbecue! As always, an amazing football experience ahead of you! As for logistics, it will be pretty much the same as the tour. You will meet Mateus in the hotel and go by taxis to the pitch, around 4 hours early, so you have time to enjoy the pre-match experience. Around 45 minutes before the game starts, go to the seats and enjoy football!

Day 7 - Free day
Day 7 - Free day

Its been a busy trip so far and so today is left to you to do as you please. Maybe you'll choose to simply relax and the beach - but if you choose to do more you host can help you plan the perfect day.

Day 8 - Maracanã Stadium Tour
Day 8 - Maracanã Stadium Tour

It is time for Maracanã Stadium Tour! Officially called Estádio Mário Filho, was built to serve as the flagship venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the biggest football stadium in the world. Construction began in August 1948 and was completed almost two years later. Eight days later, Maracanã hosted the opening match of the 1950 World Cup between Brazil and Mexico (4-0). It would go on to host four more matches in the first round group stage and a further three in the second round stage, among which the deciding final match between Uruguay and Brazil (2-1). The official attendance of the final was about 173,000 paying spectators, but it is estimated that more than 200,000 witnessed the game live from the stands. When Brazil got awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007, it was clear that Maracanã was destined to host the final and would, therefore, need a massive redevelopment.

The stadium can be easily accessed by metro and train. Maracanã station is a stop on metro line 2, which can be boarded in downtown Rio or the Flamengo and Botafogo areas. It can also be reached with a transfer from line 1, which runs from the Copacabana and Ipanema areas.

Our local host will meet you in the hotel and head by subway to the stadium. We've been many times with groups over there and we can't get enough of this! Every time you step on the field, magical things can happen!

FAQs

Will the Stadiums be open in 2022? At what capacity?

Rio’s stadiums are open and at 100% capacity.  We cannot guarantee that restrictions will not return but we will keep all customers up to date on any developments.

Will I have to demonstrate I am vaccinated? Or show a negative test?

You will need to provide a negative PCR test to enter Brazil. While the restrictions may ease we advise all customers looking to travel to Argentina to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

How many people will be on the tour?

The maximum number of people the host will allow is stated above. However this number may not always be met and it may even be possible that your party is on the tour on your own. Higher numbers make for a more sociable experience, lower numbers make for more personalised attention from your host. Look at it as a win/win!

What happens if COVID-19 means I cannot travel?

Your deposit can be transferred to a later date (with no time limit), transferred to another tour, or even given to a friend. This flexibility also applies if you decide to cancel for any reason (as long as you give us 45 days notice)

Do I have to pay the full amount when I book?

No, you can secure your place with a deposit of just 30%, then pay the balance at least 4 weeks before your trip date

Can I change the included matches?

The included matches are final in order to keep the group together.  However where the itinerary has spare time and there are matches that could be added on we will be only too happy to help you with tickets.

Where in the stadium will we be sitting?

If we know where you will be sitting we always mention this is in the inclusions section.

Unfortunately we are not always able to tell you that at the time of booking, however our destination managers work tirelessly to make sure you get the best seats. We always aim for the long side of the home supporters section.

Can you cater to dietary needs or requirements?

Our local hosts will do everything they can to cater to travellers’ needs. It’s a good idea to share your requirements at the time of booking so that our host is able to make the required preparations

Will I have to share a room?

In order to keep the costs low we always offer prices based on 2 sharing. If you make a booking for an odd number of people you or another member of your party may be paired with another traveller of the same sex. If you wish you may pay a supplement for a guaranteed single room (this is available under extras in the booking flow).

Truly a once in a lifetime

This truly was a once in a lifetime experience. Matheus makes the experience, from his in depth knowledge of every club (not just Flamengo!) to taking you places tourists don't go. He seems to know everyone in Rio, and is always on hand to answer any questions you have about the city, football and any suggestions for things to do. This isn't just a transactional experience, I genuinely feel I have made a friend in Matheus. If you want to see Rio in a different light, both football and culture, book this and you will not be disappointed.
