In March, I had the opportunity to embark on a trip to Argentina with my girlfriend. Being a passionate football fan, I couldn’t pass up the chance to attend a match in Buenos Aires and immerse myself in the electric atmosphere. Unfortunately, our schedule only allowed us to attend a match on a Tuesday during our stay, so we eagerly awaited to see if there would be a game scheduled on that day.
Fortunately, luck was on our side as Velez Sarsfield was playing against Central Cordoba at their home stadium, and our local friend Juan had organized the outing. We booked the Vélez Sarsfield match day experience of Juan through the Homefans platform. We rendezvoused with Juan and a Swiss couple at a bar in the city center of Buenos Aires, where we enjoyed some delicious food and a couple of beers.
Throughout our time together, Juan regaled us with captivating stories about the football culture in Argentina. His knowledge and passion for the sport were evident, especially when he spoke about his favorite team, Newells.
Pre-match experience
After the pre-match at the bar, we made our way to the Velez Sarsfield stadium. Along the journey, Juan continued to share interesting anecdotes about the city of Buenos Aires. Upon arrival, we couldn’t resist capturing the vibrant graffiti with our cameras and exploring the fan shop. To our delight, a group of passionate Velez fans approached Juan and kindly invited us to join them for a beer. We eagerly accepted their offer and were led to a charming local bar adjacent to the football fields in the backyard.
Time flew by, and it was soon time to enter the stadium. En route, we caught sight of buses adorned with fans holding flares and torches, emanating a mesmerizing spectacle. The atmosphere inside the stadium was nothing short of incredible. The band played tirelessly while the crowd sang and cheered, creating an intoxicating atmosphere.
More than just a football match
It was more than just a football match; it was a gathering of families, with young children passionately screaming and singing along. Some children were even napping peacefully under the seats. This level of passion and camaraderie surpassed anything I had ever experienced before. To top it off, Velez Sarsfield secured a resounding 4-0 victory, making the result even sweeter.
My love for the football culture in Argentina was solidified during this trip, and I am already planning my next adventure to Buenos Aires for next year to attend more matches! I have a definite plan to coincide my visit with a game featuring Newells in Rosario, as Juan’s stories have ignited a longing within me to experience the vibrant football atmosphere in Rosario firsthand.
