The Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama is a very traditional football club in Rio and Brazil. A club with strong Portuguese roots created first for rowing practice but later would adhere to many other sports and become huge in football. A club that always played in black & white in order to fight against any sort of racism electing its first ‘non-white’ president in Brazil back in 1904. Religion also plays a big role for the club- you can see a big catholic chapel behind one of the goals at the stadium. Vasco da Gama’s titles speak for themselves: 4 league titles, 1 Libertadores, 1 Mercosul, 1 Brazilian Cup and many others.
In this unique experience, we’ll be at one of the most iconic and hostile grounds in Brazil: São Januário, a stadium near a working-class community whose people would die for the club. The surroundings of São Januário are full of old houses and tight streets with local bars where the fans also have a barbecue. It’s definitely worth the experience of mixing with them for a beer and to warm up for the match. Get ready for crazy fans, deafening chants, drums, big flags and a bouncing atmosphere- not only inside but on our way to the grandstand.
We’ll meet before the game in a specific place outside the stadium, I’ll show the area nearby while we talk about the local football culture. We’ll join the fans to feel the mood on the way to the main stage to be close to the organized fans so you’ll feel what it’s like to be a local supporter. A taxi or Uber is always the best way to get there as the surroundings always get very busy on a match day. I’ll make sure to keep you safe and watch your arrival until your departure.
