Walk through the city of Sevilla and you will find many enchanting things. The first thing that strikes you is its beauty and the colour. You’ll find streets full of bars, cafes and people enjoying life. That’s the most important thing about Sevilla, Sevillanos believe life is for living and live it they truly do. People are talking, laughing and joking along with the sound of flamenco songs being sung in the street. This is the sound of a city and its people enjoying life.
Religion is important here too and the city is full of churches wherever you look but some may say that the two most important cathedrals in this city with the most devoted congregations are to be found not in the city centre but in the districts of Nervión and Heliópolis. This is probably the most passionate city in Europe and that passion extends to football.
To the east of the city centre is the metropolitan and wealthy Nervion district. It’s known as ‘the second centre’ with a large shopping mall as the focal point of the district along with Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán which stands opposite and is the home of Sevilla Fútbol Club.
Known as ‘la Bombonera de Nervion ’ due to its steep stands and incredible atmosphere the stadium is home to the record seven times Europa League winners Sevilla FC. On a matchday, the stadium truly comes alive with the famous ‘Biris Norte’ ultras leading the chanting and animation.
Sevillialistas are very proud of their club and claim the city as their own. Enjoy a pre match beer and food and learn about this incredible club. Meet local fans who can regale you with tales of incredible European nights and victorious finals. Experience the matchday hymn, sung acapella by the fans which even Lionel Messi himself admitted is one of the greatest sounds in football.
The Avenida De La Palmera runs to the south of the city and is lined with beautiful ornate houses and palm trees. At the bottom of it lies the 60,000-capacity Estadio Benito Villamarín. Real Betis may not have had the success of Sevilla in recent years but this has not affected the loyalty of the Béticos. The stadium is full for all matches and boasts one if not the most incredible atmospheres in Spain.
Betis motto is ‘Viva el Betis manqué pierda which means Long live Betis even though you lose. Betis fans call Sevilla ‘la ciudad de Betis’ and are also seen as the team of Andalucía. This club does not only represent a city but a region. They say that Betis is not only a football club but also a feeling and it is hard to disagree.
This is Sevilla where Real Madrid and Barcelona simply don’t exist. There is only Sevilla and Real Betis. So join me in the most passionate football city in Spain, perhaps in the whole of Europe for an unforgettable Sevilliano experience.
