In the vibrant, eclectic streets of Montevideo, the capital and cultural center of Uruguay, surrounded by authentic buildings and a bustling industrial port which forms an integral part of Mercosur – South America’s leading trading bloc – the Superclásico rivalry between Peñarol v Nacional was born. Montevideo is an unusual setting for a legendary footballing rivalry, but the location adds so much character and energy to this game.
The Superclásico between Peñarol v Nacional may not receive the coverage of some of the worlds biggest rivalries, but it is undoubtedly deserving of its place in the pantheon of the biggest derbies. Contested between Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Peñarol, it is the oldest footballing rivalry outside the British Isles and has captured some of the most unforgettable and entertaining games in Uruguayan football history. Glorious footballing rivalries exist in South America beyond Brazil and Argentina, and the Superclásico in Montevideo is a prime example. Experience the Uruguay football culture at its best off the beaten path in May and join a small group of like-minded fans for an incredible football journey through Montevideo.

Your trip Includes:
Located between two Latin American travel powerhouses, laid-back Uruguay is one of the continent’s most inviting secrets. Often overlooked by travelers making a beeline for neighboring Brazil or Argentina, Montevideo might be the world’s most chilled-out capital, thanks to Uruguayans’ casual attitude toward life.
Home to about half the country’s population, the pace is sedated here, where colonial architecture rubs shoulders with low-rise skyscrapers and 15 miles of beach-side Rambla. A walk through the city must include picturesque Ciudad Vieja and Barrio Sur neighborhoods as absolute highlights.
Overshadowed by the biggest football nations like Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay has always shared their passion for football but has not garnered as much recognition as perhaps it deserves. But if there is a country you must visit if you want to experience the real history of football, that place is Uruguay.
Peñarol and Nacional are the most successful teams in Uruguay. We are talking about a unique football rivalry here. Experience the Superclásico between Peñarol v Nacional, with some of the most passionate fans in South America and you’ll be amazed by the incredible passion of their fans.
TOUR EL CENTENARIO
In the geographical center of town, you run into the mythical Centenario Stadium. Completed in 1930 to host the inaugural World Cup finals, the stadium got its name to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the Republica Oriental del Uruguay, the country’s first constitution, and was named in 1983 by FIFA as one of football’s top five classic venues (together with the Maracana, Wembley, the San Siro and the Bernabeu).
While the enormous bowl’s concrete seats are edging closer each day to celebrating their own centenary, they never seem to tire of hosting the passion, pleasure, pain, and pyrotechnics of the world’s oldest derby match outside the British Isles.
PRIVATE TOUR EL GRANDE PARQUE CENTRAL
Home to Club Atletico Nacional, the old school stadium is full of rich memories. You can walk through the stadium and feel the passion everywhere. You will be guided in English and have exclusive access to the dressing rooms, pitch, museum and other historical places.
TOUR LUIZ FRANZINI
One of the football temples in Uruguay, the stadium of Defensa is located in the heart of the city, in a beautiful park. This unique place is important for all football lovers. Take a tour at Luiz Franzini and discover more Defensa during your stay in Montevideo.
