RIO DE JANEIRO
Brazil has always been a nation that breathes football. Although people often point to the success of the national team as the greatest indication for the country’s undying love for the sport, it also boasts a magnificent domestic league complete with several derbies that rage with passion and intensity. Indeed, of all the derbies, there is none more beguiling or engrossing than the Rio de Janeiro epic, known widely as the ‘Fla-Flu’, between Flamengo and Fluminense.
You’ll experience one of the worlds biggest derbies together with a local host and learn more about the rivalry between both clubs in Rio de Janeiro. The match has become synonymous with a fully packed Maracanã, fans bouncing and brimming with excitement at the prospect of watching a great rivalry. The spiritual home of Brazilian football, the Maracanã is at its finest when it is awash with flags, banners, and fireworks celebrating the build-up to the Fla v Flu. Due to the huge numbers it attracts, it has been labelled The Derby of the Crowds. Like so many other rivalries in world football, it is a game driven by the fans and contested for them!
We’ll also tick off another local derby in Rio de Janeiro between Vasco da Gama v Botafogo in the incredible old skool stadion: São Januário Stadium and home matches of Fluminense and Botafogo throughout the 8 days in Rio de Janeiro.
In Rio de Janeiro, we will guide you to 4 stadiums to learn more about the biggest clubs in Rio de Janeiro. You’ll visit Botafogo’s stadium, Maracanã & Vasco Da Gama’s (football academy that revealed Romário and Juninho Pernambucano to the world) neighborhood.
The temple of football, Maracanã was for many years the biggest stadium on earth. With a capacity of 200,000 people, it was the host of the 1950 World Cup and after being completely renewed, home of the WC 2014, won by Germany. The greatest players in the history played over there, including Pelé, Beckenbauer, Diego Maradona, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi, beyond others.
We’ll get an exclusive look at one of the greatest football stadiums and you will see the best moments in football, by far. The Arena, nowadays, is home of Flamengo and Fluminense, an amazing derby that you will also experience with Homefans during this trip.
Pedro Godoy will be your local host for 10 days in his country. Pedro is a crazy Corinthians fan, a Homefans member and he will guide you through these 10 days in his country. He is the right person for the job, who knows every single story and facts about the Brazilian rivalries and both cities we are visiting. Please, fill him with questions, he is always here to help!
