Overview

Brazil is, and always has been,  synonymous with football.  The national team are respected (and feared) across the world – and the domestic league, which provides the breeding ground for the national team, offers lively, passionate and exciting matches.

This tour will cover Brazil’s 2 major cities; Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and will combine football, samba, steaks and sightseeing.

Start in São Paulo, the biggest and most important city in Brazil, which has an intense rivalry between Corinthians and Palmeiras and is the birthplace of Pelé and Neymar, Santos FC. Split into well-defined neighbourhoods, the city is immense. In the east zone, you will find Corinthians, with more than 30 million supporters. Then, in the west part, Palmeiras, a club with Italian traditions who plays in the modern Allianz Parque. In the south of the city, São Paulo FC already won three Copa Libertadores and World Cup of Clubs. Then, located 50 km from São Paulo on a beach area, there is Santos FC, the best youth academy in the country!

The next stop is Rio, famed for its notorious favelas which provide fertile ground for excellent players. No wonder then, that the country has many football venues. A game at the Maracanã stadium of Flamengo or Fluminense is something that has to be on your wishlist if you are going to travel such a distance, but there is more! Botafogo and Vasco da Gama are just two other teams within the city limits, both playing at stadiums where the atmosphere can really flourish on a good day.

Expect days spent in stadiums, playing footvolley with locals at the Copacabana and sunbathing beneath swaying palms, sipping caipirinhas or beers at sunset and embracing the rhythms of samba. Looking for an incredible football adventure in paradise? This is it. With stadiums filled with oceans of colourful shirts, with thousands of fans screaming for their beloved heroes and free-flowing goals, the beautiful game is at its most stunning in Brazil. .

We bring together fans from all around the world who seek to experience football off the beaten path. You will share the experience of a lifetime alongside a group of like-minded fans who hold a wealth of experience far deeper than just watching their local team.

Welcome to the most epic football experience of your life – Welcome to Brazil, one of the best football capitals around the world for watching football! Vamos.

Day 6 - Maracanã Stadium Tour
Day 6 - Maracanã Stadium Tour

It is time for the Maracanã Stadium Tour! Officially called Estádio Mário Filho, was built to serve as the flagship venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the biggest football stadium in the world. Construction began in August 1948 and was completed almost two years later. Eight days later, Maracanã hosted the opening match of the 1950 World Cup between Brazil and Mexico (4-0). It would go on to host four more matches in the first round group stage and a further three in the second round stage, among which the deciding final match between Uruguay and Brazil (2-1). The official attendance of the final was about 173,000 paying spectators, but it is estimated that more than 200,000 witnessed the game live from the stands. When Brazil got awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007, it was clear that Maracanã was destined to host the final and would, therefore, need a massive redevelopment.

Our local host will meet you in the hotel and head by subway to the stadium. We've been many times with groups over there and we can't get enough of this! Every time you step on the field, magical things can happen!

Today will be dedicated to some quality group time at the beach in the morning and football in the afternoon/night! We will meet up around 9:00, book a nice place at Copacabana and get some sun while drinking beers and caipirinhas, wrapping up the weekend. After that, we can have lunch and go to a wonderful Flamengo match.

The team’s colours are red and black with a vulture as a mascot and the boastful slogan of O Mais Querido do Brasil (the most beloved in Brazil). You will go together with your local host by subway to Flamengo's supporters pre-match, with tons of beers, steaks and samba! Enjoy the atmosphere, take photos and make sure you will remember this experience forever!

After that, in the afternoon, we will go to the most old school and authentic stadium in Brazil, São Januário, from Vasco da Gama. We will get a tour at the stadium that is located in the middle of the favelas. Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea. We can also have lunch in their headquarters and taste some beautiful codfish. The ground has a capacity of around 15,000 supporters and the Ultras are one of the most intense in Brazil. A nice curiosity to know about: The club raised through their youth academy names such as Romário, Juninho and Phillipe Coutinho. So there’s plenty of history to learn about!

There we will listen to their stories about their club whilst enjoying a beer or two! Once we soaked up this pre-match atmosphere, we will make our way to the stadium. FAQs

Will the stadiums be open in 2021/22? At what capacity?

Homefans believe that stadiums will be open to fans, however we cannot at this stage confirm what the capacity will be.  However our flexible booking policies mean that if the stadium will only accept 50% fans and you decide you only want to travel with 100% attendance you can swap to another venue or another date.

Will I need to prove I am vaccinated? Or show a negative test?

This will vary destination to destination and based on your nationality and age. Therefore Homefans are not able to advise on this.  Please check the foreign ministry of your destination and home country and the stadium requirements.  Again, if you find the requirements too much you can defer to later in the season/year when they relax further.

COVID-19 hasn’t gone away- should I still book?

We believe so, we all need something to look forward to.  But we understand that people may be apprehensive which is why we have created a flexible cancellation policy which means in the event that the event does not happen the amount paid simply becomes Homefans credit.

You can transfer this to a later date (with no time limit), transfer to another tour, or even give it to a friend. This flexibility also applies if you decide to cancel for any reason (as long as you give us 45 days notice)

Do I have to pay the full amount when I book?

No, you can secure your place with a deposit of just 30%, then pay the balance at least 4 weeks before your trip date depending on your destination.

Where in the stadiums will we be sitting?

If we know where you will be sitting we always mention this is in the inclusions section.

Unfortunately we are not always able to tell you that at the time of booking, however our destination managers work tirelessly to make sure you get the best seats. We always aim for the long side of the home supporters section.

How many people will be on the tour?

The maximum number of people the host will allow is stated above. However this number may not always be met and it may even be possible that your party is on the tour on your own. Higher numbers make for a more sociable experience, lower numbers make for more personalised attention from your host. Look at it as a win/win!

Can children / young adults join the tour?

If we can accept children there will be an option in the booking flow. However for many trips our local hosts take the decision, based on the content of the tour, to open this up to adults only. If you are looking to travel with under 18’s, please feel free to contact us and we can discuss your options.

Can you cater to dietary needs or requirements?

Our local hosts will do everything they can to cater to travellers’ needs. It’s a good idea to share your requirements at the time of booking so that our host is able to make the required preparations

Will I have to share a room?

In order to keep the costs low we always offer prices based on 2 sharing. If you make a booking for an odd number of people you or another member of your party may be paired with another traveller of the same sex. If you wish you may pay a supplement for a guaranteed single room. Simply make your booking as normal and get in touch with us to arrange this.

Incredible experience

Just an incredible experience from start to finish. Four unique match day experiences at some of Brazil’s biggest and most famous clubs, with the most passionate fans. Stadium tours take you deeper into the history of the clubs, stadiums and their local community. And there’s time to do some non-football tourism as well, or just enjoy your time in these incredible cities. The guides are all very helpful and makes sure everting runs smoothly. Always on hand if needed. A once in a lifetime trip that was all I hope for and more.

Fantastic Trip

Where do I start, what an amazing trip. At short notice Matheus was drafted in to do the Sao Paolo part of the trip too. Him not being that familiar with Sao Paolo didn't detract from the experience. Matheus was knowledgeable, friendly and even took us to an extra game. Onto Rio, Matheus was so knowledgeable, we even got to 'hang' with some 'Ultras' prior to the Flamengo game and got to play a drum prior to the game (albeit not very well) :-) Matheus knows so many people so we got to experience the game with some of his friends too. The football was amazing, the tours of the favela in Rio and the Samba night were fantastic. If you get the chance to do this trip, do it and if you're lucky enough to get Matheus as your host consider yourself very lucky. He's a fantastic, friendly, very knowledgeable guy. A great experience for us.
