The capital of one of the world’s most powerful ancient empires, Rome is a fascinating place that has inspired people to visit it for millennia. With its breathtaking buildings and monuments, incredible works of art, small-town charm, leisurely pace of life and world-renowned cuisine, the Eternal City is worth a visit at least once, though it would take a lifetime to see all it has to offer!
Italy is a big football nation. They are 4x winners of the World Cup, having giants clubs like AC Milan, Juventus and Internazionale and biggest idols, such as Del Piero, Pirlo, Buffon, Maldini, beyond others. But Rome is something else…
Hatred in Rome was born in 1927 when three football clubs from the city were joined to form AS Roma. Effectively, it was an effort on the part of Benito Mussolini to have a single representative of Rome to challenge the supremacy of the northern teams. Lazio, named after the region in which Rome lays, refused to join this conglomerate club.
With the creation of Roma, Lazio suddenly found themselves as outsiders. The derby, therefore, became a question of territory. To Roma fans, Lazio became associated with the countryside. Thus, the term ”burini” or ”peasants” is frequently used by Roma fans to describe their rivals. Territorial issues are amplified due to sharing a stadium as well as both teams’ colors and symbols.
Roma has therefore ingrained themselves in the history and mythology of the city itself, with Lazio being ousted to the fringes of the capital. But Lazio supporters remain defiant that they are the true team of Rome. As former Lazio captain, Tomasso Rocchi said, as quoted in ITV4’s documentary, “They have the colors of a team from Rome, but Rome for us is Lazio.”

Match Day! Italy’s “Derby Della Capitale,” the eternal struggle between AS Roma v SS Lazio, is one of world football’s most enduring rivalries. Every season the Italian Capital turns into an arena when these clubs face each other for the pride of the city.
Such has been the success of Italy’s other sides in recent seasons, winning the Scudetto has been little more than a distant dream for these two. Instead, they have focused on their mutual disdain, and the long-term rivalry between these two capital clubs has bubbled ferociously.
The Rome Derby is about ownership, ownership of a city…what was it Commodus said? “Control the mob and you control Rome. Every fan loves a match day. And is Rome you truly feel what the experience is like. We will leave our hotel and head to some of the most important squares in the city, seat down in a nice pizzeria and enjoy some pizzas and beers provided by Homefans.
After that, we will walk towards the Stadio Olimpico and hang out of Italians fans for some pre-match drinking. The game itself, it is just a battle. It would be true to, therefore, say that as each player steps onto the pitch, they bring more than just a desire to take home three points. They bring a piece of hefty baggage of fan expectation fueled by the political and territorial tension of the Eternal city.
After the match, we recommend having an Italian dinner together and tell each other some great stories about the day we had. After some proper dinner, we can have a beer on the beautiful streets of Rome together with the locals.
On the final day of our football adventure, we want you to enjoy no matter what. We recommend you going an amazing tour, discovering Rome by crossing the Seven Hills riding a Vespa scooter, looking over the majesty of ancient monuments such as the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine or the splendid view of the Roman Forum from the top of the Capitol Hill. A journey through time to rediscover the wonders of Rome Caput Mundi!
After that, we believe that there are people who unfortunately will have to go back home. Now it is time to say goodbye, pack your stuff and go back home with unforgettable memories! Skip the touristic routes and tick off one of Italian biggest derbies in Rome in style.
