The Sevilla derby features on our program every year, and for good reason. It’s one of our favorite derbies! Keep reading to learn more about the rivalry and see the footage our traveller Jordan captured at the November 2019 derby.

El Gran Derbi

Seville may well be the hottest city in Europe’s, and Andalusia’s capital enjoys double-figure temperatures well into mid-winter.

In summer, people have to flee the heat. And twice a year, a very different kind of heatwave hits the city – El Gran Derbi!

“Forget El Clásico…”

Of course, the battles between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are of higher quality. And naturally, you need to see Lionel Messi before he kicks the bucket in a few years.

But purely for the match experience, it’s not the place to be. Unless you like your matches to resemble Disneyland. Complete with Bart Simpson suits in Real kits and tourists flashing their cameras if Real score in Camp Nou.

You’ll see none of that in Seville.

As with many rivals from the same city, there’s a difference in social class between the two clubs. The supporters of Betis are seen as the workers and the Sevilla fans as elites. People in Seville are divided into two basic categories: The Sevillistas (Seville) and the Béticos (Real Betis).

Spain’s biggest city derby

The Sevilla derby is the biggest inner-city derby in Spain. Maybe even the biggest game full stop.

Real v Atletico is good fun, but the game isn’t that big a deal for the Real faithful. The Clasico? All good and well, but both clubs are hours apart. So losing supporters won’t have to worry about being bullied by the entire city.

They do here.

Every derby day, The Béticos give out as much fire as they can. Particularly now Sevilla escaped from their shadow and gained European stardom. This derby lives on a knife-edge, and you really must see it for yourself!

All of this footage was captured by our traveller Jordan. Jordan shot all of the footage during his trip to the Seville Derby with Homefans in November 2019.
