The game of the games, the clash recognised as the most passionate derby in the world. But please, first of all, make sure to not call it derby. It is a clásico, but due to the international and commercial backlash, it’s even bigger than a clásico. It is the holy grail for any football fan. It is the Superclásico!
Probably some of you don’t know that both teams are originally from the La Boca neighbourhood. Looks bit weird, River Plate playing next to the Caminito street, isn’t it? Well, this is one of the hottest issues about this rivalry, both teams meet and faced many times when football was still on amateur level in Argentina. Finally, in 1938 River moved and celebrated the construction of El Monumental. On another side, Boca established themselves in La Boca by building its temple in 1940, La Bombonera. The red stripe represented ‘Millonarios’ (the millionaires) and the golden bar ‘Xeneizes’ (the people, immigrants mainly from Genoa, in Italy). The preference for the finest football against the struggle to play each other in a game who will change radically the history of football. Boca and River played to own the ‘barrio’, to rule ‘La Boca’ and being the main representant of the quarter.
Despite the River Plate’s origin in the ‘barrio boquense’, the team was always moving from one barrio to another one until they set up their headquarter in Núñez, where El Monumental is built. However, Boca has never moved from La Boca. The museum of River and Boca are full of trophies, you can see the historical players whose defended CARP or CABJ shirts. And the stadiums are two of the universal temples of football. Each one with its differences and characteristics, but completely magical.
The red ‘franja’ in diagonal and the golden horizontal bar on the chest. El Monumental against La Bombonera, two of the biggest and passionate supporters in the world. We can’t talk about this game without mentioning the Copa Libertadores final in 2018. It seemed the largest final in history, three times called off, unbelievable. And the final outcome in Madrid, something very weird and still being the pillar of protests and regrets for both sets of fans with AFA (Asociación del Fútbol Argentino) and CONMEBOL, taking away the final from Argentina. Obviously, the images of Boca’s bus and the riots outside the Monumental were viral all around the world, very sad scenes for football fans. But this just only increased the tension between Boca and River.
