We get it. Traveling around the world to watch football is not just about the matches or watching the best football of the traditional top clubs. In fact, more and more fans are looking for experiences and new football destinations: The derbies in Belgrade became by far the most popular football trips on Homefans, Argentina took our trips to a whole next level to experience football, the Polish football culture is one of the craziest in football and the Stockholm derby is an all-time favorite of some of our travelers.
With football season well underway, we’ve curated a list of the best trips for 2018/2019 for all the Globetrotters and people who love to travel to watch football around the world.
SUPER CLASICO: BOCA JUNIORS v RIVER PLATE
Yes, we’ve been receiving A LOT of requests from fans and travelers all over the world for the biggest football derby on the planet. Also, one of the most difficult fixtures to organize a trip for. We have good news, in 2018/2019 we’re going to Superclasico in Buenos Aires. This season it will be played at La Bombonera – surely on everyone’s bucket list – unfortunately, we don’t have unlimited spots. In fact, we only have 12 spots for this trip every season. We’ve been to Argentina a couple of times, this will be the ultimate experience.
Apart from the Superclásico, we’ll organize five trips to Argentina next season including multiple matches, stadium tours, bar crawls and a lot more.
ULTIMATE BRAZIL: DERBY MADNESS
The biggest football nation in the world of football, everyone in Brazil loves futbol. Brazil should be on your bucket list to at least experience once in your life. Not only do we have a Brazilian in our team who knows exactly what you need to see once you’re there – he also created an epic 10-day journey through the biggest football capitals in Brazil combined with a total football madness. Be prepared to experience the biggest Brazilian derbies in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – it’s going to be epic. Save the date: October 2018
We can unveil one detail: It’ll include 4 matches including three derbies – the biggest ones in Brazil. These derbies bring the state to a stand-still. Some of the sides are among the most widely supported in all of Brazil, and both measure their fanbase not in thousands, but in tens of millions.
By far the most exciting trip of the season in Europe, the one we always look forward to the most. This season we go back to Belgrade twice for the clash between Red Star v Partizan. One of the most intense derbies in football, one you have to experience at least once in your lifetime. Every season this trip is sold out in within a few days and we understand why. The experience is incredible in the Serbian capital. Experience the derby the local way with our local Serbian friend -and also part of the Homefans team- Ivan.
To call this one a mere disagreement between two religious divides would be to massively under-sell the British’ biggest derby. Old Firm between Celtic v Rangers is still one of the biggest derbies in football. Every season we travel to Glasgow to experience the derby in collaboration with both clubs and locals, a unique experience.
Social, economic, political and sectarian tensions have combined to make this a unique fixture in world football, one which was almost banned in the 1930s in order to reduce the crime rate following the rise of Glasgow’s street gangs. While these tensions are not as prevalent as they were, it has done little to dampen the flames of this rivalry, Old Firm is still one of the biggest derbies in football.
Old Firm – one of our personal favorites.
THE HOLY WAR: WISLA KRAKOW v CRACOVIA
The atmosphere at in Polish football is hard to compare with anything. Wisla Krakow is one of the few clubs where you can see the whole stands jumping. The Cracovia vs Wisla Krakow game is where you will see a sea of hands in the air whenever the capo tells to raise them. This is the game when chants are thundering onto the pitch. This is simply one of the craziest derby in Poland.
When you have an intense rivalry between two teams, usually they are two separate cities. Not in this case, as both resign in Krakow. The stadiums of Wisla Krakow and Cracovia are only 500 meters apart and the housing estates are nearby one another too. When they play against each other, it’s one of the most intense football matches in Europe.
The atmosphere at these derbies is hard to match. It’s simply THE match to experience in Poland and preparations are made months before. Experience an authentic Homefans Krakow experience with our local host Filip next season!
Italy’s “Derby Della Capitale,” the eternal struggle between AS Roma v SS Lazio, is one of world football’s most enduring rivalries. Every season the Italian Capital turns into an arena when these clubs face each other for the pride of the city.
Such has been the success of Italy’s other sides in recent seasons, winning the Scudetto has been little more than a distant dream for these two. Instead, they have focused on their mutual disdain, and the long-term rivalry between these two capital clubs has bubbled ferociously.
The Rome Derby is about ownership, ownership of a city…what was it Commodus said? “Control the mob and you control Rome.” This derby should be on your list! Next season we’ll create an EPIC football weekend in Italy including the Derby Della Capitale – don’t miss it out!
THE CLASH OF COPENHAGEN: BRONDBY v COPENHAGEN
Brondby v Copenhagen, every season one of the derbies that gets to insane levels in terms of atmosphere and rivalry. Next season, we’ll travel to Copenhagen to experience the Copenhagen Derby the local way. It wouldn’t be the same without experiencing it through local eyes, we are very thrilled to work together with one of the most experienced football travelers in the world of groundhopping. Check the trip here.
Last but not least, we’ll travel to more derbies next season, you can see some of them here. Last season was a great journey with hundreds of fans who turned into friends. Be prepared for some epic experiences, we can’t wait. You’re invited.
