Hi guys! My name is Kevin and I will take you to the most amazing matchday experience!
The Northern Derby is first played on a social level. Historically, Lens is a city known for its mining industry, involving a proletarian class. This working class is very often praised among the fans chants. In opposition, Lille, the rival city, is often referred to as a “bourgeoise” city. Only 40km separate the two cities. Back in the 1980-1990, RC Lens was still an important club in the French football panoramas. After having played in the Second Division for ten years, they are back in Ligue 1 since 2020, giving us the opportunity to enjoy the derby!
What makes this derby so special? Apart from the social dimension revolving around this game, The Northern Derby of France has a great enlightenment thanks to the Lens fans. They are known to be the best fans in the country! Indeed, once you get there and the game starts, you will get cheap thrills as the whole stadium starts singing some of their most iconic chants in the beautiful Bollaert Stadium. The city and the stadium literally turn red and yellow on this occasion, and the whole Northern region of France gets to support its side.
Lille is very often favourite when it comes to the field, but with these fans, you can climb any mountain, it doesn’t matter much if you’re playing as the underdog. All along the game, you will witness great support, chants and animations in the stands, as Bollaert is a widely participating stadium. Just imagine that Lens has 30,000 inhabitants, and the stadium capacity is 38,000… and it is always full!
You will meet me for a small tour in the city, where you will already be able to sense what is at stake during this game. I will provide you with in-depth information on French football culture and RC Lens history. There is so much to tell! You have the opportunity to discover the mining city, pride of the locals, where mineworkers used to live. Feeling sporty? Why not climb up to the mining heap and enjoy an impressive view over Lens and its majestic stadium?! For museum lovers, Lens offers a great one: the Louvre-Lens. It is the little brother of the main Louvre in Paris. They share collections, pieces of art!
Enjoy a few drinks and head to the stadium for a moment you will never forget!
