Hi, I am Peter an English native guide living in Berlin!
This tour is all about the Red side of Berlin, with a stadium tour of one of Germanys cult clubs – FC Union Berlin combined with an amazing tour of the key sites of the former Soviet East Berlin.
With a turbulent history of disappointments and near misses FC Union climbed into the top tier of the Bundesliga in 2019, however, the club’s cult status doesn’t come from success on the field, its the amazing sense of community expressed by the fans. For example, when the current stadium needed a rebuild, money was tight, but for Union that was no problem as their fans stepped up and helped build the stadium. Union is a great example of fan culture and the closeness which still exists between German football fans and their club. No plastic fans allowed here!
In this half-day activity, you will be picked up in a comfortable minivan direct from your hotel and we drive together to the South East of Berlin and the Stadion An der Alten Försterei (Old Forester’s House). We then take a guided tour of the legendary stadium which still retains large standing-only sections which delivers a cracking matchday atmosphere. The tour also takes in the unique traditional scoreboard house and the forester’s home across the street from which the stadium gets its name. We discuss the whole fan centred concept of FC Union which makes it one of the most unique clubs in German football. We talk about German football fan culture, the absence of Oligarchs and Petro Billionaires in the Bundesliga and the principle of the fans being the majority owner of their clubs, the benefits this brings but also the challenges ahead.
After the stadium tour, we hit the road to visit some awesome historical sites around the former “Red” Eastern Berlin. A short drive from the stadium you can check out the heavy artillery and tanks on display outside the Russian-German museum at Karlshorst. This building is of massive importance, it is where the German Military signed their unconditional surrender at the end of WW2 in the presence of the Soviet and Allied Armies. The room where the surrender documents were signed remains intact. The building now serves as a fascinating permanent WW2 exhibition where you can learn more about the ferocious Battle of Berlin at the end of the war.
Next up we drive further to the memorable Treptower Park Soviet War Memorial where the 12-m tall statue of a Soviet soldier with a sword holding a German child, stands over a broken swastika. This is the final resting place for around 5,000 Soviet Soldiers of the 80,000 who lost their lives in the Battle of Berlin.
We then make our way along the showpiece boulevard of the Communist Berlin, Karl Marx Allee. This main avenue was copied on the Stalinist architecture found in Moscow, with fantastic views of the iconic Berlin TV Tower as we head back into the centre of Berlin. From here we head on foot to one of Berlins top craft breweries located just a short walk from Alexanderplatz. At this point, we have a quick cold German beer and say our final farewells, while your tour continues to rock on with a one-hour brewery tour and beer tasting of six selected locally brewed beers!
The tour ends near Berlin Alexanderplatz in the very centre of Berlin.
