Hello, my name is Nikos. I was born and raised in Athens. After I spent 5 years in the UK, I came back in 2016. A few hours after I arrived, I drove with friends 2 hours to an away game. Half of my life is connected deeply with my team, sports and the culture around them. I was raised playing basketball in small teams and playing football with friends.
Panathinaikos is the team of Athens, the capital of Greece. It was founded in 1908 and we have a huge history not only connected with sports but strongly connected with the social and political life of the city. I believe it is very interesting to see how this history is built around our historical stadium was transferred to other neighbourhoods and parts of Athens and Greece. Panathinaikos Club does not only have football and basketball. We have teams in the ”amateur” leagues from water polo to rugby and ping-pong, strong women’s teams and all of these teams are part of the fans’ life.
In this tour, we will start from the historic stadium and walk around the neighbourhood while talking about the history of the club and the city at each time. Then we’ll see where the teams are playing nowadays and combine them with a game of the amateur leagues and always the fan graffiti. Of course, it would not be a day tour without food and beer in the local bars and taverns around the stadium.
