Welcome to Nantes, a historical football city in French football culture. Despite having become a very successful nation, French football did not look like it is now. Main teams of today were not as successful back then, and most of the main teams of the past have been somehow decaying over time and unfortunately became less of a staple.
It is the case for FC Nantes Atlantique, which was one of the most popular and successful clubs back in the ’60-’80s. At that time, FCNA was ruling over French football with clubs like Saint-Etienne or Reims to name a few. Nowadays, Nantes keeps this legacy intact with a strong identification to the club from the sympathizers of the club and a solid fan base. The yellow and green colours of FC Nantes are deeply rooted in the city’s identity and locals mind, giving them the nickname “Canarys”.
The club is also known to be one of the best football training academy of the country. The first team is competing every year in Ligue 1. With its location, Nantes has many rival cities in Britain (Rennes, Lorient…) along the Loire (Angers and the “Derby de la Loire” against Saint-Etienne, which is actually more a rivalry than a derby, given that the cities are so far away from each other) and also along the Atlantic coast (“Derby de l’Atlantique” against Bordeaux).
These games are some of the many reasons for the supporters to fill their La Beaujoire Stadium very often, not to mention the big games against the top teams of the country (PSG, OM, OL…). La Beaujoire is a really nice stadium, with a capacity of 38 000 seats. The club is currently studying the possibilities of building a new stadium and has entered an interesting transition period since 4 or 5 years, looking for more success!
